One of the most important and talked about advice when it comes to skincare is to always, always clean your skin and remove makeup at the end of the day. As a matter of fact, it’s the single best piece of advice out there when it comes to looking after your skin. It allows it to breathe and renew itself over night, it reduces the risk of clogged pores and acne, it helps prevent premature ageing and ensures any skincare applied after cleansing really gets the job done to achieve a glowing/flawless skin.
But did you know that when most of us remove makeup at the end of the day, we actually don’t always get rid of every last trace of it. Very often, we don’t realise how much is left behind until we go for the second cleanse. This is especially true if you have been wearing foundation, concealers and waterproof makeup as these were formulated to be long lasting.
You might wonder how having small traces of makeup left over can negatively impact your skin. After all, you got most of it and you feel that you skin can breathe just fine. And you would be right if we were talking about the very occasional traces of mascara left in the corner of the eye. Except when you only cleanse your skin once in the evening and call it a night, and you then do this night after night, well your skin can really be affected by this.
Don’t get us wrong, we love makeup just as much as the next woman. It’s empowering, fun, artistic and is a great way to express your own personal style and personality. But if it isn’t removed properly every single night, it will clog your pores big time and accumulate. Which will lead your skin to breakout and get inflamed. Which will then lead you to use more makeup to cover up all of this. And before you know it, you end up with skin that has an uneven texture, redness, blemishes, dry patches, more fine lines and just a general tired appearance.
Now of course many other things can cause the above skin problems: diet, hormonal imbalances, improper follow-up skincare, stress, medication, allergies, lack of sleep, change of season etc.. And double cleansing is not the miracle save all cure to achieve perfect skin, but it can make a huge difference in the look and feel of your skin.
We have recommended this in person to many customers when doing a personalised skin consultation, and the feedback after only a week of double cleansing has been incredible! So much so in fact, that a few have actually gone up to triple cleansing to ensure every last bit of makeup is 100% gone. Many have actually informed us of how surprised they were to take a cotton pad after the first cleansing and realise how much is actually left over.
Here is the advice we have given them to ensure a perfectly clean canvas to apply the follow-up skincare:
Step 1. Use an almond sized amount of Cleansing Balm or a few drops of Botanical Oil such as Sweet Almond Oil, Rosehip or Inca Inchi Oil and start applying all over the face including over the eye lids and eye lashes (do not ever use essential oils or black cumin seed oil on or around your eyes). The reason we recommend using a Cleansing Balm or an oil to remove makeup is that it will literally melt away even the most stubborn of waterproof makeup and it is very gentle on the skin. Use circular motions all over to ensure most of your makeup has been taken off by the oil.
Step 2. Using a soft cotton face cloth and some warm water, remove the cleansing balm/ oil and makeup residues from your face. Rinse the cloth with some warm water.
Step 3. Repeat step 1 ensuring you reach down on your neck, under your jaw line as well as the inner corner of your eyes as well as along the hairline as these areas are often forgotten about.
Step 4. Repeat Step 2 again.
Step 5. Splash your face with some cold water
Step 6. If you want to be extra diligent, you can now go for a last step and take a cotton pad with a little floral water to gently go over your face one last time and ensure all makeup/dirt/pollution is now completely gone.
Step 7. Follow up with your usual skincare. We recommend following up with an oil based serum before going to bed.
And voilà! It will take you an extra 5 minutes in the evening but it is so worth it and your skin will really thank you.
